Gus was born the
seventh of eight children in Summerside, outside of Cincinnati Ohio,
on October 27, 1910. His father was a steamer trunk maker. Gus often
said "We were poorer than church mice, but we always had enough to
eat."
Gus quit Norwood High School at age 16 in order to work and support
the family. His ambition later allowed him to graduate from night
school and the Littleford Business School. This was the start of his
living the American Dream. His business career eventually included
owning Suburban Realty, Park Lumber and Supply, Fireside Realty and
Builders Inc., Vice President of Midwest Savings Association and
owner of numerous rental properties.
In 1941, at age 31, Gus married the love of his life, Jeannette
Fussinger. In 1942 he and his loving "Sweetie" began their family
which would include sons Richard and Tom and twin daughters Jennifer
and Jean.
In 1929 Gus and two classmates found an old car in a field and they
made a sprint car out of it. This marked the founding of Hoffman
Racing with Gus as the owner of the Team. Gus was affectionately
called "Old Timer" in his later years and he continued to attend
races until his passing at age 90. |
